They have found that they can not only recognize some names but can also understand the meaning of many words. This is not easy to prove, but the researchers have drawn these results based on the recording of brain activity of some dogs in their study.
The study, led by Mariana Boros of Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary, involved experiments on 19 dogs of different species, including border collies, toy poodles and Labrador retrievers. After the experiment it was proved that dogs can understand much more than small commands like sit, hold.
In this experiment, dog owners selected five things to identify their pets. After this, after calling the name of one thing or two, they had to put in front the same thing or some other thing. Researchers monitored the brain waves of each dog through electroencephalography (EEG).

Boros says the aim was to know whether dogs understood the meaning of words. If so, then the reaction of their brain should be different when things and their names match and do not match. While different types of signals were given when names and things did not match, different types of signals were given when words and things matched.
It is clear that apart from humans, other animals can also understand the meaning of words and dogs have this ability. The study also revealed that dogs can understand more than what they show. Not only this, the results were much the same as seen in the case of humans. This means that dogs also have the brain process of associating a thing with an object.
